It was the anniversary of our accident, and four out of the five of us were members of that "double-flip" club, and there I was sitting next to Jeff, who together we have the worst bush taxi luck on record, and we don't want to say anything out loud because already two others had had to pop some Xanax to get thru the pass. I don't know yet how I am feeling about it all, the 2 years, the leaving, the coming home again -- am a little numb really, like it isn't real yet and won't be until I'm there. I warn you all now that I don't know what to expect of myself once back. They tell us we will be truly uncomfortable in our own country for awhile, which yeah I've been through before but not for this long, and not to a place like Africa, so who bloody knows?   more »
View Article  New Year Update and the power of African healing!
New Years was spent on a beach with a bunch of Rastafarians, drinking rum out of fresh coconuts, sprinkling hedwig glitter over all the party-goers and the bar staff (much to their delight), dancing around a bonfire to the beat of the djembes, running into the ocean at midnight with a bottle of champagne... Great way to start the year, which I have decided will be my year of miracle. I have a sticker on my water bottle that proves it, and people keep asking what is going to happen. I get the sense that Togo is probably a nice place to live for 2 years or so, but not necessarily to visit, say, as a tourist. I was struck by that very early on, realizing that only my most adventurous friends should even think about it.   more »
